Slavery, as a form of labor, has not inflamed a whole-scale political and social crisis more seriously anywhere than in the United States during the nineteenth century. In fact, the slaves were forced, kidnapped or â€Å"born† to be the suppressed and were not only required to perform endless labor, but also tortured, suppressed and bestially destroyed in numerous heartless ways — physically and mentally. However, a few decades before the outbreak of the civil war, it was barely possible for the ordinary to know about the details of how the slaves lived in the south due to several factors such as the limit of communications. Fortunately, Fredrick Douglass, an educated run-away slave, wrote and published â€Å"The Narrative of the Life of Frederick†¦show more content†¦For example, Douglass narrates that a woman slave was killed brutally by her mistress because she just had a rest while the baby whom she took care of was crying. A trivial â€Å"mistake† shockingly cost her life to pay for the baby’s cry. Also, they were not allowed to read, write and learn, which further kept them as â€Å"properties with only feelings†. By doing this, the masters and overseers torn down the slaves’ spirits and infuse one so-called indubitable belief into what the slaves â€Å"held† to be true — they were born to be slaves and nothing could change their status. During the nineteenth century, young women workers went on strike because of over exploitation on them. Indentured servants rose up because of mistreats. However, the slaves were always kept in their traps because they were suppressed from birth to death, were unable to tell what they could have except their current situation, and were forced to spend most of their time and energy on stealing some coarse bread to survive.By implementing all those inhumane conducts described by Douglass in his narrative, slaves were suppressed to a state that their emotions became plain, their desires became trivial and their nerves became numb, which is exactly the situation that the plantation owners wanted. Homer Essay World Literature 10October 18, 2000How can one determine a writers feelings about issues by simply reading their literature? Often it seems, one can read more than just the words written on the page. We can read the feeling and emotion the words represent. Homers tone in The Odyssey shows his feelings about the past, present, and future of Greece. He portrays Ancient Greece as being overly structured and rigid. He shows the Golden Age he lived in as being perfectly ideal, and balanced. His view of the future predicted chaos, slackness, and confusion. Through particular characters, objects, and settings, he symbolizes accurately these viewpoints to the reader. Homer used people, objects, and places to symbolize his view of the past. Poseidon was certainly a character Homer used in this symbolization. He represents Ancient Greece as it was run by the powerful, unforgiving gods. To show his power, he destroyed the Phaeacian ship which had brought Odysseus safely to Ithaca. Ah, surely then the ancients are come to pass, told by my father, who said Poseidon was displeased because we were safe guides for all mankind; and he averred the god would wreck a shapely ship of the Phaeacians, returning home from pilotage upon the misty sea, and so would throw a lofty mound around our city (XII). He perfectly symbolizes the severeness of Ancient Greece. Adding to this view of the former time is the yard of Eumaeus. He found him sitting in his porch, by which was built a high-walled yard upon commanding ground, a handsome yard and large, with space around(XIV). This description of the walls symbolizes the past in the way that the past was overly structured and took everything to extremes just like the yard was over protected. One can also see a symbolization in the stool thrown at Odysseus by Antinous. So saying, he seized his footstool, flung it and struck Odysseus on the back of the right shoulder, near the spine (XVII). This stool can be understood as a symbol or anger and hurt. The past was a time Homer could remember only as strict and overly structured.Homer also gave many representations of his time. The Golden Age of Greece was in Homers eyes the ideal generation. Odysseus, disguised as an old beggar, could hardly represent this time. Yet, through this beggars transformation into royal looking Odysseus we can see a symbolization of past changing into an improved current period. For lately you were old and meanly clad; now you are like the gods who hold the open sky (XVI). Strong, beautiful Odysseus is a model character illustrating this time. Homer uses places such as the Phaeacian ship to symbolize the Golden Age. Then as the sea-borne ship drew near, running full swiftly, the Earth Shaker drew near her too, turned her to stone and rooted her to the bottom, forcing her under with his outspread hand, and went away (XIII). The ship, representing balance, was forced down. Homer knew Greeces Golden Age was coming to an end. It would be forced down like the balanced ship. The bow of Odysseus finishes this view. I offer you the mighty bow of prince Odysseus (XXI). This mighty bow completes Homers view of the ultimate Golden Age in which he lived. Homer foresaw the future as looking chaotic. This is portrayed throughout the book. Telemachus, a young and forgetful man, symbolizes the future as he is always not quite thinking about what he does. It is seen that they communicate with each other using sign language or physical tokens. These usages of different types of tools to communicate indicate their ability to use language. When we go back into the past we find that in the beginning the language was not related to speech and can be said to be a type of sign language. Many researchers have made studies and have come to the conclusion that apes can understand sign language and can easily communicate with humans if trained to do so. A chimpanzee was caught in the wild and was named Washoe. When she was ten months old, she was handed over to a husband and wife involved with the researcher’s team. It is a fact that chimpanzees are fully dependent till two years of age and semi dependent up to four years of age. They made the environment like a deaf parent would make for their child and then started experiment on Washoe. There was at least one of the researchers with her when she was awake and tried a lot of techniques in order to teach her sign language and how to communicate with humans. Before project Washoe, attempts to teach animals the voice language had failed so the researchers tried to teach her the American Sign language in which they succeeded to a far extent. While teaching Washoe, when she used to learn any language properly she was rewarded so that it encouraged her and initially she was even taught to bring her hands together and touch her fingertips. Then the couple started teaching her to be more precise with her hands’ movements. In the first couple of years the couple were not sure whether she was really catching the language or not because sometimes she did not react to that but when she was shown the object she would make the correct sign for that. This also shows that chimpanzees applied their own wish and brain and not just copied what they were taught. Augustus Cain is a good person, despite his background and upbringing he was able to emerge through the narrative. Cain is a man in the corner; his conditions determine his values and morals. He lost himself to himself and his own society. Although, he has lost himself he evolves and turns into a â€Å"soul catcher† throughout this novel many times, one of the souls he’s caught was even his own. He evolved as a person through breaking the four guiding principles constantly that his father said for him to follow. The four guiding principles were that â€Å"one should always respect one’s property: that it was necessary to care for protect it, to never misuse it, as it will someday be called upon to care for and protect you† (White 31); â€Å"That a Negro was in many ways like a child and it was the moral duty of the white man to look after and guide them† (White 31); † That his very whiteness not only set him apart from and above them – morally, intellectually, physically – but that it also linked him in a blood bond with every other white man† (White 32); † Whites and Negroes were created by the Almighty to be separate† (White 32). Cain engages in a forbidden relationship with a black woman named Rosetta. This relationship tests Cain’s character, will, care and decisions. She tests Cain’s will during her bathing in the river. While Rosetta is bathing, Cain is half turned away; â€Å"he felt this to be some sort of test of will, a temptation he felt bound to renounce in order to prove to himself, that he wasn’t common, that he wasn’t like Preacher or Strofes. That he was different† (White 206). He is also attracted to her in this scene. Post Rosetta exiting the river and him glancing at her and having a hard time averting this stare. He says that â€Å"he felt shamed as a rumbling commenced down between his own legs† (White 207) as he looked between hers. When Preacher tries to rape Rosetta, Cain almost kills him out of protection for her. When Rosetta is kidnapped Cain goes and asks around for her, and says  Ã¢â‚¬Å"I’m trying to help her† (White 287) and pushes onward out of his determination to save her. After saving her Cain is captured by John Brown and says that he doesn’t plan to send Rosetta back to Eberly, and Brown believes him and sends him away to a settlement in Ohio called Gist. Cain and Rosetta are laying together in a cabin and Rosetta kisses him, they continue to kiss and begin to remove their clothes. Cain then thought â€Å"He knew that he was crossing a line that he could never cross back over again† (White 377) and they made love. Cain is different from the other men that are portrayed in this novel, that are to be thought of as of brothers to him because of the blood bond that they share. Cain is more sympathetic to blacks then the rest. When Preacher is beating Joseph, Cain hates preacher for his mindless cruelty and didn’t believe on harming anyone in his â€Å"profession† unless it was absolutely necessary. â€Å"He preferred using his wits rather than violence or force† (White 55). He also feels bad for Joseph, so much that he couldn’t ignore Preacher slashing cuts in his body. He says to him â€Å"Alright, that’ll be enough† (White 56) and kicks him. He also tells him to stop acting like a cur if he doesn’t want to be treated like one. He degrades him to a dog in this scene. He also tells Joseph that if he didn’t comply with them that Preacher would hurt him and that Cain himself â€Å"didn’t want that† (White 58). Post Preacher suggesting they sell the boy and Cain disagreeing and calling it common thievery. Preacher also says that he shouldn’t act so high and mighty and that â€Å"Slave catcher, blackbirder. They’re all the same in my book† (White 60). Cain responds that â€Å"No, we’re not all the same. I’m carrying out the law† (White 60). This was a point in the novel where Cain again separates himself from his â€Å"brothers† and explains that he’s only doing this because he has to survive and pay off his debt not out of the malicious intent like a blackbirder or most slave catchers. At the end of all this Cain gives the boy a dollar coin to pay him back for his eggs. Cain is compared metaphorically throughout the novel to the people that his whiteness is supposed to set himself apart from. Cain is a runaway. He ran away from the life of a farmer and slave-owner. â€Å"Cain had decided early on that he wasn’t cut out for the life of a farmer† (White 32). He instead  joins the military to basically escape this inheritance from his father. When he tells Rosetta this she says to him â€Å"that makes you a runaway, too, Cain.† (White 245). He also â€Å"runs away† from the problems in his world by drowning himself in the vices, which are also the very things that metaphorically â€Å"enslaves† him. He is an alcoholic who constantly drinks laudanum. He has a gambling problem and has sex constantly with prostitutes. He also was tired for working for people like Eberly. These kind of people were white slave owners â€Å"that thought their money made him their nigger† (White 11). Also Cain explains to Rosetta that he has to bring her back to Eberly although he doesn’t want to because of his honor. She says that â€Å"Honor. He done bought and paid for you just like me†; Cain responds â€Å"No one owns me†; Rosetta says â€Å"Oh, he own you, all right. The only difference between them was that she knows it and he doesn’t† (White 210). Cain is overall a different person at the end of this novel. He has involved in interracial affairs with a black woman. He hasn’t respected the technically â€Å"property† of another man which would be Rosetta to Eberly, by not returning her to him, which ofcourse was the right thing to do. He is also acknowledged by Rosetta and other people in the novel even John Brown, as a â€Å"good man†.
